ST. HELENA FROM ENGLISH BOOK OF HOURS.
Item Details
Description
Ink, gold and paint on vellum. St. Helena with her attribute of the cross. Reputedly from the English Book of Hours possibly made for the Knyvett Family of East Anglia, late 14th-early 15th century. According to a copyof a note this page was purchased January, 1960 from one of the owners of the book, HP Kraus after he bought five of them back from a previous owner, Rudolph Wein. Compared to two pages sold at Sothebys in 2013 and 2017,this appears to be the same in composition and design. Corners have armorial shields, the top one having a rampant lion (?) with crosses. Some wear, old tape shows at corners. Framed, 10.25"h. 8.25"w.
Condition
03-18-21 Some stains and foxing. Taped at corners to underside of mat (old tape)
